Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 6, 2026

BirdPin is designed so that your data never leaves your device unless you choose to share it. This policy covers the BirdPin iOS app and this website.

The BirdPin app

What BirdPin stores

When you log a sighting, BirdPin saves the species, the time, your spoken input, and — if you have granted location permission — your current coordinates. Everything is stored locally on your device using Apple's on-device database. BirdPin has no servers, no accounts, and no sign-in.

What BirdPin collects

Nothing. The app makes no network connections. It contains no analytics, no advertising, no crash reporting, and no third-party SDKs. We never see your sightings, your location, or anything else about you. Your data belongs to you.

Location

Location is requested with “while using the app” permission only and is read once at the moment you log a sighting. It is attached to that sighting and stored on your device. If you deny location permission, sightings are simply saved without coordinates. BirdPin never tracks your location in the background.

Siri and voice input

Voice input is handled entirely by Apple's Siri and dictation systems under Apple's own privacy terms. BirdPin receives only the finished text of what you said, which it stores on your device with the sighting. All species and nickname matching happens on your device.

Sharing and export

The only way data leaves your device is when you explicitly export your sightings as a CSV file using the share sheet. The export includes the species, date and time, count, your original input, and coordinates for each sighting. Where that file goes is entirely up to you.

Data deletion

Your sightings belong to you. Delete them at any time inside the app, or remove all app data by deleting BirdPin from your device.

App Store and TestFlight

If you have opted in to share analytics with developers in your device settings, Apple may provide us with aggregated, anonymized usage statistics and crash reports. This data comes from Apple, is governed by Apple's privacy policy, and never includes your sightings or location.

This website

The BirdPin website is a static site with no accounts, no forms, and no cookies.

Hosting

The site is hosted on Vercel. Like any web host, Vercel processes standard server request logs (such as your IP address and browser type) for a short time in order to serve the site and protect it from abuse. This is covered by Vercel's privacy policy. We do not use these logs to identify you.

Analytics

The site may use Vercel Web Analytics, a privacy-focused analytics service. It uses no cookies, stores nothing on your device, and does not track you across sites. It gives us only aggregated, anonymous counts — things like page views, referrers, country, and device type. No profile of you is ever created, and nothing connects your website visit to the app.

Children

Neither the app nor the website collects personal data from anyone, including children.

Changes to this policy

If a future version of BirdPin or the website ever changes how data is handled, this policy will be updated and the “last updated” date revised before that change ships.
